LOWTHER HALL SAMPFORD HOUSE

Client: Lowther Hall Grammar School

Project category: Education

Location: Melbourne, Australia

Status: Completed 2011

Sampford House was a cellular classroom and science building from the 1960’s constructed around an open courtyard that provided low amenity and an almost jail like circulation balcony.

It was highly contentious to assess the cost and benefit of adaptive reuse versus complete replacement of the existing building, in order to achieve a purpose designed middle years learning facility for year 7, 8 and 9.

The retention option was selected, for Town Planning reasons, and it is there with delight that the school has embraced the transformed building which provides well proportioned, flexible learning spaces with sliding glass doors to generous breakout zones, excellent use of natural light and an ambiance that is focused on the girls.
